Five Years Ago on RCZ: Barack Obama Announces!

Five years ago today on Radioactive Communist Zombies I wrote a very long piece on why I'm pro-life.  But also, this relatively unknown senator for Illinois announced he was running for president.  At the time I said:

[I]f he weren't black, he'd be more fringe than Dennis Kucinich. He's been in the Senate about a month. Before that he was a state senator. He makes Dan Quyale look like an elder statesman when he was running for Vice President.

But the American people (and lots of illegal foreign money) elected Barack Hussein Obama to be president and the rest is painful history.

I'm not the only one remember that it was five years ago that Obama announced he was running.  The RNC has an ad:

In what may become a continuing, occasional series: five years ago today on RCZ: The federal minimum wage was going up and I was, of course, against it because I hate poor people.  No, wait, that's not it, it's because:

People aren't poor because they aren't paid enough, they are poor because they can't earn enough.  There's a big difference.  And raising the minimum wage ensures some of them won't earn anything.

And there was talk of a tiny snail that was going to stop farmers in Idaho from irrigating their crops. And I wondered how many farmers would lose their livelihoods to save a snail.

A 2011 Recap

Since I tend not to blog on weekends and holidays, this will probably be the last post of 2011.

So, what did we do in 2011? We covered a lot of ground for both my readers.  I've just been looking at January and I talked about the Gabby Gifford shooting aftermath (and the stupid calls for speech restrictions), the fact that Canada banned the song "Money for Nothing" and that nuclear power is a better use of concrete than wind power.

And that was just January.

I blog because I have something to say.  Sometimes it's a little forced as I try to blog every weekday.  Sometimes it's inspired as I run across something I really feel the need to say something about.  I've occasionally turned Toastmaster speeches into posts (see here and here).  I bashed ethanol (not as much as in the past), doubted anthropogenic global warming, and tweaked political correctness and liberals whenever I could.  And occasionally, I simply rambled.

Also celebrated this blog's five year anniversary.

Well, look for more in the future.  You never know what might pique my interest.

Five Years Ago

Instapudit has been doing "Ten years ago on Instapundit" which is marginally interesting.  This blog hasn't been around for 10 years but it has been around for five.  Five years ago today I was speculating on the 2008 Democrat presidential primary in which I said Hillary and some guy named Barack Obama were the front runners:

This is based solely on Hillary being Hillary and Barack being a Black man who doesn't walk/talk/act like a rap singer or NBA star.  And Barack being an unknown with zero baggage.  Hell, at this moment in time I know of no reason not to vote for him other than he's a Democrat.

Oh, if we only knew then what we know now.  Now I wouldn't vote for Barack Obama for dog catcher.

It's amazing how things can change in just half a decade.  The MSM wanted Obama to be president and they got him.  They are still trying to keep him in the Oval Office but even with the lickspittle love affair between Obama and the MSM, his approval is somewhere in the low forties.  Now if the GOP will only nominate someone who can beat him (good luck with that).

Blog Neglect!

Yes, it has been Monday since I last blogged (and this is Thursday, I think).  I'm not exactly sure what happened Tuesday morning but I just know I was busy.  Then I had a book signing out of town in the afternoon.  So that killed that day.  Yesterday (Wednesday) started at 7:00 A.M. and ended at 9:00 P.M. when I emailed the story I was writing off to the publisher.  The story was based on an interview I did that day (out of town, of course) but the deadline was this morning.

And today I slept in, had an local luncheon to attend, then a dentist appointment, and now I'm finally on my computer.  And I have something I want to blog about courtesy Twitter.  So I apologize to (both) my readers for neglecting my blog.  I promise to do better.

Happy 5-Year Anniversary

Believe it or not, today is the five-year anniversary of this blog.  It was started on September 24, 2006. That was just in time for the '06 off-year elections.  We've gone through the horrific 2008 election, the pretty good 2010 election, and I'm sure we'll be here for 2012.

Some stats: Total page views as of now: 50,884

Page views per day (average): 27.90

Total Posts: This is post 2,603.

Posts per day (average): 1.425

Regular readers 2 (that is an estimate).

Well, my hopes of become a controversial, much read/quoted blog have not come to fruition.  But I won't stop blogging.  Like writing, it is something I need to do.

We'll have to see where we are in 2016.

Information Age: Too Much Information

Yes, the phrase "information age" is an about 30 year old cliche.  But I think we may have hit it and I'm, personally, finding it overwhelming.  Twitter was the straw that broke the camel's back. Right now I have two blogs (this one and another one on writing/books), a Facebook account (and two Facebook pages), participate in my publisher's Facebook group, a Google+ account, and two twitter accounts (one political, one about writing).  On the political one I'm following about 20 conservative/libertarian tweeters (and there are more I would follow, I've weeded it down to that).  And the information overload is tremendous.  I could spend all day reading their links (and another day blogging about the interesting ones).  Add in the usual things I read on the 'net, plus just news, and it's information overload.  Now wonder lately I'm having trouble getting through books.

I think I understand why some people just read Us magazine and ignore the rest of the world (what is Katy Perry wearing to the Emmys?).  But I can't do that.  I've been a news junkie since I was a kid.

Just be glad I don't blog about everything I read on Twitter.  Or both my readers would have to spend a good deal of time reading this blog.

50,000 Page Views

This blog hit 50,000 page views today.  Which would be impressive if it hadn't taken almost 5 years to do it. That's an average of 27.97 views per day.  I once got a couple of thousand views in a day (when Instapundit linked to me).  And I've had days, not that long ago, when I've only had 10 (very recently, in fact).

So why do I do it?  Well, I need an outlet.  I need a place I can be creative and let my passions flow (politics, mostly).

Today I spent most of the day working on the manuscript for my forthcoming book, Hammer of Thor.  Good thing I blogged a lot yesterday.

So, dear readers (both of you) this blog will continue.  Also, I'm starting to tweet (link to the left), which is a whole 'nother challenge.

Here's to 100,000 page views . . . in less than 5 years, I hope.
