Will there be a high performance "Volt SS" plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in the future? GM Vice Chairman of Global Product Development Bob Lutz has hinted so accordingto AutoblogGreen:
When asked whether or not Chevy could shock the performance crowd with an SS version of the upcoming Volt, Lutz said, "I would not discount that possibility." That's as close as you're going to get to an admission of intent this early in the game. Lutz goes on to suggest that the Voltec powertrain will allow for plenty of on-demand power. "[I]f we want to sacrifice a little bit of fuel efficiency in the interest of performance and still get over 200 miles per gallon, we can do that any time."
I've read that electric motors put out a tremendous amount of torque. So much so that a guy in Portland, OR built a winning dragster with electric motors. Torque is what makes your car speed up quickly. Horsepower is what makes it go fast once it gets there.
Would I buy a "Volt SS"? Probably not (can you imagine the price?). But in the future hybrid high performance may be all that's left to us.
