The Intercollegiate Studies Institute gave a test to self-identified elected officials. The test was on history, civics, and economics. As AFP reports:
US elected officials scored abysmally on a test measuring their civic knowledge, with an average grade of just 44 percent, the group that organized the exam said Thursday.
Ordinary citizens did not fare much better, scoring just 49 percent correct on the 33 exam questions.
One question of the multiple choice test was who were our enemies during WWII. Only 69% of respondents got that right.
The test, by the way is here. When I took the test I got 94% correct. So I'm way above average.
Years ago I proposed a test for voting so that people who vote at least have some knowledge of what they are voting about. I called it the "Standardized Test of Understanding the Institutes of Democracy" (S.T.U.P.I.D). It had 10 questions such as:

Well, we have stupid voters and therefore, we have stupid elected officials. We truly get the government we deserve (unfortunately).
