The "Live Earth" concerts began at 9:00 P.M. EDT (6:00 P.M. my time).
I love their tag line: "Movement for a Climate in Crisis." Nice alliteration that "Climate in Crisis." To me a crisis is when the sky is on fire, not when there's a possibility of a few degrees of warming by 2100. But that's just me. I'm a "denier."
I guess the concerts are to raise money (for what?) and "awareness." Awareness? If you don't know about global warming, you must be living in a cave. If you haven't formed an opinion about it by now, you must be an idiot (the kind that would let Sting's opinion on the matter sway them).
Apparently the spiritual leader of the Global Warming Taliban, al'Gore, opened the first concert (in Sidney) with the "Live Earth Pledge" asking all there to take the pledge. The man who's carbon footprint is about twenty times yours wants you to:
-To demand that my country join an international treaty within the next 2 years that cuts global warming pollution by 90% in developed countries and by more than half worldwide in time for the next generation to inherit a healthy earth;
[So say goodbye to 90% of economic growth. So you have a one in ten chance of keeping your job.]
-To take personal action to help solve the climate crisis by reducing my own CO2 pollution as much as I can and offsetting the rest to become “carbon neutral;”
[Oh, like Al Gore and his private jet; and how many rock stars flew to this thing?]
-To fight for a moratorium on the construction of any new generating facility that burns coal without the capacity to safely trap and store the CO2;
[You know, nuclear power doesn't put out any CO2]
-To work for a dramatic increase in the energy efficiency of my home, workplace, school, place of worship, and means of transportation;
[I'll give up private jets. Will Al Gore?]
-To fight for laws and policies that expand the use of renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on oil and coal;
-To plant new trees and to join with others in preserving and protecting forests; and,
-To buy from businesses and support leaders who share my commitment to solving the climate crisis and building a sustainable, just, and prosperous world for the 21st century.
["Just" meaning what exactly? Oh, yeah, taking from rich countries to give to poor countries. That's sustainable. And when rich countries are as poor as poor countries, then the world will be just.]
Well, at least this stupid thing will be over and I'll be able to stop hearing about it.
